Il Palazzo is a spectacular 17th century building offering a truly unique slice of Italian history. The main house was originally a mansion inhabited by the aristocracy. Later it was used as a convent, then the local town hall before being converted to residential apartments approximately 30 years ago.
The complex has gardens, a swimming pool (open from 15 May to 30 September each year) and beautiful 180 degree views of Lake Garda itself.
The property is set high in the hills, about 3 or 4 km drive up from the town of Villanuova sul Clisi and about a 7km drive to the lakeside town of Salò on the western shore of Lake Garda. The swimming pool is shared by a total of 19 apartments, but the complex is generally very quiet, with most of the other owners being Italian and visiting only on weekends and during the month of August. Rarely is the whole complex occupied at the same time.
Ideal for walkers and hikers (there are many walking trails in the woods behind the building), or those simply wanting to experience a genuine slice of Italian history while relaxing in the sun. Il Palazzo has plenty of atmosphere and character.
The nearest restaurant is a trattoria 400 m away, but it is a steep walk back up to the apartments. You definitely need to bring or hire a car.
The main entrance leads on to a wide, original marble staircase, opening on to an open plan state of the art kitchen area, with the main bedroom with ensuite and the shower room to the left, and a study area to the right, leading also to a second bedroom and huge living and dining area with open fire. This sofa also opens out to become a double bed. There is a large flat screen television with DVD player and surround sound, plus UK satellite television, and two sets of double glass doors opening onto a private terrace with stunning view of Lake Garda. The dining area, towards the back of the living room, provides seating for six people and a large dining table, complete with chandelier and candlesticks.
Leading off the kitchen is a laundry room, with a washing machine and plenty of room for drying clothes.
The large terrace provides spectacular views of the swimming pool and lake.
The main bedroom has two bedside tables with lamps, a huge wardrobe and looks out over the garden to the front of the property.
The second bedroom is a single, with two bunks also suitable for adults. Air-conditioning is not needed.

Spacious and comfortable apartment restored to a high standard in a beautiful historic building. Stunning views over the lake from the grounds and aparrtment balcony. A steep and twisting 4km drive up to the apartment would not be to everyones taste, and a car is essential. Steep steps, hard stone surfaces and (at night) dark corners mean the property is not really suitable for the elderly or infirm, and young children cannot be left unattended.
Beautiful accommodation in an excellent location . Quiet with superb views.
Il Palazzo “la terrazza” was a wonderful surprise after the windy steep road to get to it. But it was worth the effort as the apartment is lovely, spacious and very tastefully decorated. The whole palazzo is beautiful with a lovely pool and stunning views of the lake. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and relaxing both by the pool and also on our terrace. As previous reviewers have mentioned, the drive to Salo takes about 20 minutes, and it is a lovely town. The Cannetto restaurant on the road down from the palazzo is well worth a visit and our party had 2 delicious meals there.
Beautiful appartment, just like staying in someones home. Lovely large balcony to sit and eat on after using the well equipped kitchen. Fantastic views over Salo too. The only problems we had were with the main entrance gate and the front door to the apartment. Boths locks needed patience. Marilyn was very helpful and quickly gave us a new key to the main gate (still a bit hard to work) and her husband showed us the trick to the front door. She was wonderful throughout our stay.
This is a wonderful property that did not disappoint. It is spacious, airy, comfy and boasts wonderful views of Lake Garda and the town of Salo. It is well maintained and while there were a few hiccups on arrival the owners acted quickly to put things right. The kitchen is so well appointed and designed that we chose to cook for ourselves more often than we’d planned! The communal pool area works very well despite the number of apartments in the Villa. The location, which is several kilometers up a very steep and windy road, is both an added attraction and a drawback! It is in a quiet location with great views and it is cooler than down at the Lake. However, it is not within walking distance of local amenities and the drive to and from Salo takes 20 minutes, great concentration and a car and driver worthy of the challenge!
Loved it. Spacious, modern, well equipped, stunning view, exceeded all our expectations. Plan to return.
